Bolt-action rifle
The bolt-action rifle is the most common hunting weapon in Norway. Reliable, accurate, and versatile.
The bolt-action rifle is the workhorse of Norwegian hunting. Over 90% of all rifle hunters use a bolt-action, and for good reason. The mechanism is simple, reliable, and delivers high accuracy.
The principle: You pull the bolt back to eject the spent case, push it forward to chamber a new cartridge, and lock the bolt by turning it down. Between each shot, you must cycle it manually.
For big game hunting in Norway, a good bolt-action rifle in 6.5x55, .308 Winchester, or .30-06 is all you need. Modern rifles from Tikka, Sauer, Bergara, and Merkel deliver good accuracy right out of the box.
Choosing a rifle is about fit. The stock should match your body type so you get a natural cheek weld. Try several models in the shop before deciding.
Barrel length for hunting is typically 51 to 61 cm. A shorter barrel gives a lighter weapon and faster handling in dense forest. A longer barrel provides somewhat higher velocity and a flatter trajectory.
The trigger is important. A clean, light trigger (1 to 1.5 kg) makes it easier to shoot accurately. Most hunting rifles can be adjusted or have their trigger mechanism replaced.
Maintenance: Clean the barrel after each hunting trip. Use a bore guide or copper brush and solvent. Lightly oil the mechanism. Store in a gun safe without a case (for air circulation).
