About moose hunting
Moose hunting is Norway's most popular big game hunt. For many hunters, it is the highlight of autumn. The hunt is typically conducted in teams, with hunters stationed at posts spread across a larger area while drivers move through the terrain. Good communication and safety are essential.
Stalking moose has become more common, particularly in areas with sparse populations. You go alone or in pairs, usually early in the morning or late in the evening when the moose is active. It requires patience and the ability to read terrain and wind direction.
The rut in late September and early October is an exciting period. The bulls are active and less cautious than usual. Calling with birch bark or a moose horn can produce results.
A rifle in 6.5x55 or .308 caliber is common. The bullet must hit vital organs for a quick and humane outcome. Shooting practice throughout the year is a prerequisite.
Hunting Season
25. sep – 31. okt
Utvidet jakttid til 30. november eller 23. desember i en rekke kommuner, særlig i Innlandet, Trøndelag og Nord-Norge. Sjekk lokale forskrifter.
Weight
Levende vekt: ku 250–350 kg, okse 350–550 kg. Slaktevekt ca. 55% av levende vekt.
Distribution
Elgen finnes over hele fastlands-Norge, men de tetteste stammene er i Innlandet, Trøndelag og Nordland. I kystfylkene vestpå er bestanden tynnere, men økende.
Terrain
Elgen holder til i barskog og blandingsskog, gjerne nær myrer og vassdrag. Om sommeren beiter den i frodige lier og langs bekker. Om høsten trekker den ofte ned til lavereliggende skog.
Identification
Mørk brun pels. Oksen har store skovlgevir som felles hver vinter. Kua er noe mindre og mangler gevir.
Hunting Tips
Konsentrer jakta rundt morgen- og kveldstimene. Elgen er mest aktiv i skumringen. Vind i ansiktet er viktigere enn alt annet ved smygjakt.
