Semi-automatic rifle
Semi-automatic rifles provide faster follow-up shots. Popular for driven hunts and wild boar hunting.
A semi-automatic rifle chambers the next cartridge automatically after each shot. You don't need to operate the bolt manually, which allows faster follow-up shots.
In Norway, semi-automatic rifles are permitted for hunting with a maximum magazine capacity of 2 cartridges in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber (3 shots total). This is regulated in the firearms regulations.
The Browning BAR, Benelli Argo, and Merkel SR1 are popular semi-automatic hunting rifles in Norway. They are used especially for driven hunts where quick follow-up is important, and for wild boar hunting where animals can appear fast and close.
The downsides compared to a bolt-action rifle are somewhat lower accuracy (generally), higher weight, and a more complex mechanism that requires regular maintenance.
A semi-automatic rifle is well suited for hunters who primarily hunt in driven hunts, or who want the security of fast follow-up shots. For those who do a lot of stalking where accuracy at longer distances matters, a bolt-action is often the better choice.
Faster shots don't mean you should shoot irresponsibly. Every shot should be deliberate and safe.
