Storage and gun safe

Accessories

Legal requirements for storing hunting firearms in Norway. Approved safes and regulations.

All firearms in Norway must be stored in an approved gun safe when not in use. This is required by law and enforced by the police.

Gun safe requirements: The safe must be FG-approved (the Insurance Companies' Approval Board). This means it has been tested for burglary resistance and meets the requirements of the firearms regulations.

Mounting: The safe must be bolted to the wall or floor with expansion bolts. A safe that is not bolted down is not considered properly stored under the regulations. A minimum of two bolts in the floor or two in the wall.

Placement: The safe should be located in a room that is not freely accessible to unauthorized persons. Basement, bedroom, or storage room are common locations. Avoid garages or sheds where the safe is visible.

Ammunition: Must be stored locked up, either in a separate compartment in the gun safe or in a separate lockable container. Many gun safes have a dedicated ammunition section at the top.

Keys: Must be kept inaccessible to unauthorized persons. Not in a drawer near the safe. An electronic lock (code lock) is a good alternative.

Number of firearms: A standard gun safe holds 5 to 10 firearms. Buy one large enough from the start. Collections grow.

Police inspection: The police can conduct unannounced inspections of firearms storage. Make sure everything is in order at all times.

Transport: When the firearm is outside the safe (to and from hunting), it must be transported unloaded in an approved case. The bolt or barrel should be separated, or the firearm should be in a case.
