9.3x62mm Mauser
A powerful large caliber for moose hunting at close range. Popular in dense forest and driven hunts.
9.3x62 is the moose hunter's caliber in dense forest. The large, heavy bullet (286 grain / 18.5 g) delivers enormous killing power at close range and penetrates through bone and muscle where lighter calibers may fail.
The caliber was developed in 1905 by the German gunsmith Otto Bock, originally for hunting in Africa. In Scandinavia, it has found its niche as the ultimate close-quarters caliber for moose.
Advantages: Great stopping power, good penetration, reliable killing effect. The bullet expands significantly and creates large wound channels.
The downside is substantial recoil and a curved trajectory that makes it less suitable for shooting beyond 150 meters. This is a close-range caliber.
9.3x62 is primarily used for driven moose hunts in dense forest where shot distances are 30 to 100 meters. It is also popular in Sweden for the same purpose.
For those who only hunt moose in driven hunts, 9.3x62 is hard to beat. For those who need a versatile caliber for different hunting methods and distances, 6.5x55 or .308 are better choices.
