Hunt leader responsibilities

The hunt leader's duties and responsibilities during organized big game hunting.

During team hunts, a hunt leader must be appointed. The hunt leader is responsible for ensuring the hunt is conducted safely and in accordance with laws and regulations.

The hunt leader's tasks: planning drives and stand placements, assigning shooting sectors, reviewing safety rules, verifying that all team members have valid hunter fees and weapons permits, and organizing tracking of wounded game when needed.

Before each drive, the hunt leader must give a briefing. Everyone must know where the stands are, who is positioned where, which shooting sectors apply, signals for starting and stopping drives, and communication procedures.

The hunt leader decides if and when shooting is permitted. If conditions are uncertain (poor visibility, unclear shooting sectors, people in the terrain), the hunt leader is obligated to cancel the drive.

After a shot, the hunt leader is responsible for initiating tracking. The hunting team must have access to an approved tracking dog, either within the team or through an agreement with a tracking dog network.

The hunt leader also maintains the harvest report and serves as the contact person with the vald administration.

The role requires experience, authority, and decisiveness. The best hunt leaders are those who dare to call off a drive when conditions aren't good enough.
