Hunting seasons regulation
The regulation that establishes hunting seasons for all huntable species in Norway (2022 to 2028).
The Hunting Seasons Regulation establishes when it is legal to hunt the various species in Norway. The current regulation is valid from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2028.
The regulation divides species with different hunting seasons. Big game has shorter hunting seasons than small game, and the seasons are adapted to each species' biology.
Municipalities can restrict hunting seasons locally if the population warrants it. They cannot extend the season beyond the regulation, with some exceptions for moose and red deer where the Norwegian Agriculture Agency can grant dispensation.
Hunting deer species requires a hunting permit from the vald/landowner in addition to the open season. The season alone does not grant the right to harvest.
Some species have different hunting seasons in different parts of the country. Wood pigeon, for example, has a shorter season in Northern Norway than in Southern Norway.
The regulation also governs the use of dogs during hunting. Loose dogs are permitted during the hunting season for most species, but restrictions exist.
The full regulation is available on Lovdata and the Norwegian Agriculture Agency's websites. Always check local adaptations with your municipality.
