Hunter fee and hunting license

The difference between the hunter fee, hunting license, and hunting permit. What you need to hunt.

To hunt in Norway you need three things: a passed hunter's exam, a paid hunter fee, and access to hunting terrain. For big game, you also need a hunting permit.

The hunter fee is an annual state fee. The price is approximately 300 NOK for hunting, or 330 NOK for hunting and trapping. You pay via the Hunter Registry (online or bank). Payment is valid for one hunting year (April 1 to March 31).

A hunting license is something different. It is the landowner's permission to hunt on their property. You can buy hunting licenses directly from the landowner, through hunting and fishing associations, Statskog, the Finnmark Estate (FeFo), or here on Jegerhub.

A hunting permit is specific to deer species (moose, red deer, roe deer, wild reindeer). The vald is allocated a number of permits based on the population management plan and minimum acreage. The hunting team receives permits from the vald.

In summary: Hunter's exam: one-time (passed once, valid for life). Hunter fee: annual payment to the state. Hunting license: permission from the landowner for a specific area. Hunting permit: for deer species, allocated from the vald/municipality.

For small game and predators, you only need the hunter fee + hunting license. For deer species, you need all three plus a hunting permit.
