Hunting boots

Choosing hunting boots for different terrain and seasons.
Good feet are everything. A day in the mountains with bad boots ruins more than just the hunt.
For ptarmigan and wild reindeer hunting: Lightweight mountain boots with good ankle support. Meindl, Hanwag, Lowa, and Crispi make solid hunting boots. Gore-Tex membrane keeps water out. Vibram soles provide good grip.
For forest hunting (moose, red deer): Sturdier boots with good insulation in autumn. Rubber boots (LaCrosse, Härkila) are popular because they are scent-free (important for stalking) and waterproof.
For standing in cold weather: Insulated winter boots. Baffin, Sorel, or heated insoles in regular boots. Cold feet after two hours on a stand is the most common reason hunters give up too early.
Insoles: A good insole makes an average boot much better. Superfeet or Sidas provide support and comfort.
Socks: Merino wool is the standard. Never cotton (retains moisture). Two layers (thin liner sock + thick outer sock) reduce friction.
Breaking in: New boots MUST be broken in before the hunt. Wear them on trips in the weeks before the season. Blisters on day 1 are unnecessary.
Gaiters: For mountain terrain with lots of heather, snow, or wet grass. Keep pebbles out and trousers dry.
