Thermal and night vision

Thermal and Night Vision

Thermal scopes and night vision optics for hunting. Technology, legality, and use.

Thermal optics and night vision devices have become increasingly accessible and popular among hunters. They provide the ability to see game in darkness, fog, and difficult lighting conditions.

Thermal: Displays heat signatures from living organisms. Works in total darkness, through fog, and light rain. Excellent for detecting and identifying animals. The downside is that you can't see terrain details.

Night vision (NV): Amplifies available light (moon, stars). Produces a green (gen 2/3) or black-and-white (digital) image. Requires some light to function. Cheaper than thermal for many purposes.

Legality in Norway: Handheld thermal monocular: Legal for observation. Thermal weapon sight: Permitted for hunting wild boar, fox, and some other species. NOT permitted for deer species. Night vision weapon sight: Same rules as thermal. Always check current regulations for your species.

Use: A handheld thermal monocular is useful for scanning terrain and finding animals at twilight. Many hunters use it as a supplement to regular binoculars.

Brands: Pulsar, Hikmicro, and Lahoux are popular for thermal. Pulsar Helion and Hikmicro Falcon are good handheld options. For weapon sights: Pulsar Thermion, Hikmicro Thunder.

Price: Handheld thermal from 8,000 NOK. Weapon sights from 15,000 NOK. Quality increases with price.

Battery: Thermal uses a lot of power. Expect 4 to 8 hours. Bring an extra battery.
