Hunting backpack

Choosing a backpack for hunting. Size, features, and packing tips.
The backpack is the hunter's mobile base. It should hold everything you need for a day in the field without getting in the way when you shoot.
Size by hunting method: Day hunt: 20 to 30 liters. Lunch, extra layers, binoculars, emergency gear. Multi-day mountain hunt: 40 to 60 liters. Tent/bivouac, sleeping bag, food, stove. Driven hunt: As little as possible, perhaps just a small belt pack.
Features to look for: Rifle attachment: Ability to secure the rifle on the outside during travel. Frees your hands. Quiet material: Avoid packs with lots of Velcro and zippers that make noise. Rain cover: Built-in rain cover or waterproof material. Chest strap and hip belt: Distributes weight. Important on heavier packs.
Carrying system: Hunting packs are designed to carry heavy loads in rough terrain. A good back frame and padding are more important than fancy features.
Brands: Mystery Ranch, Eberlestock, and Stone Glacier make dedicated hunting packs. Osprey and Deuter make versatile hiking packs that work well for hunting.
Meat hauling: Some hunting packs have a frame/system for carrying out meat. Useful for mountain hunts where you're far from the vehicle.
Packing tips: Heavy items closest to your back and up high. Items you need quickly (binoculars, lunch) in the top lid or side pockets. Extra layers easily accessible.
