About wild reindeer hunting
Wild reindeer hunting is about being alone in the mountains with the plateau stretching in all directions and no guarantee of seeing an animal. You need to read wind and weather, understand migration routes, and have the patience to wait.
The hunt is done as stalking. You move across the plateau, use binoculars to search for herds, and try to get close. Wind is the most important factor. Reindeer have an exceptional sense of smell, surpassing almost all other deer species.
It is physically demanding. The terrain is open, and everything you need has to be carried on your back. A good pack, solid footwear, and clothing for all kinds of weather are essential. Many head out for several days with a lightweight tent or bivouac.
Caliber requirements are the same as for other deer. Most use 6.5x55 or .308. Distances can be long, so practice at 200 meters and beyond is important.
Hunting Season
20. aug – 30. sep
Kort og intensiv jakttid. Kvotene varierer stort mellom villreinområdene, og noen områder kan ha svært begrenset jakt. Søknad om fellingstillatelse kreves.
Weight
Levende vekt: simle 60–80 kg, bukk 90–150 kg. Slaktevekt ca. 55%.
Distribution
Villreinen finnes kun i fjellområder i Sør-Norge. De viktigste områdene er Hardangervidda, Setesdal Vesthei/Ryfylke, Rondane, Snøhetta, Nordfjella og Forollhogna. Norge har ansvar for de siste gjenlevende europeiske villreinstammene.
Terrain
Åpent høyfjellsterreng over tregrensen, typisk 1000–1800 moh. Vidder med mose, lav og lyng. Villreinen trekker mellom sommer- og vinterbeiter og kan legge bak seg store avstander.
Identification
Brun sommerpels, lysere vinterpels. Begge kjønn har gevir. Bukkens gevir er større og mer forgreinet.
Hunting Tips
Sjekk værmelding og vindfelt nøye før jaktturen. Legg jakta til dager med stabil vind. Bruk god tid med kikkerten. Reinen kan stå helt stille og er vanskelig å oppdage.
