Hunting in Rogaland

Rogaland is split in two for hunters. Jæren and the coastal areas are among the country's best for bird hunting — geese, ducks, and waders migrate through in large numbers in autumn and spring. Greylag goose hunting on Jæren in August is a classic, and many hunters from other parts of the country travel here for exactly this experience.

Ryfylke, the eastern part of the county, is a completely different landscape. Here there are steep mountains, deep fjords, and dense forests where red deer reside. The red deer population in Rogaland has grown significantly over the last 20 years, and there is plenty of available terrain.

Wild reindeer hunting in the Setesdal Vesthei/Ryfylke area is accessible for hunters in Rogaland. The terrain is open and demanding, with little shelter from weather and wind. But for those who receive a harvest quota, it is an extraordinary experience.

Terrain and nature

Rogaland has Jæren with Norway's flattest landscape in the west, and Ryfylke with mountains and fjords in the east. Jæren is important for geese and waterfowl, while Ryfylke offers red deer hunting on steep hillsides and wild reindeer hunting on the heath areas. The coastal landscape has mild winters and green grass almost year-round.
