Hunting in Agder

Agder is a county of great contrasts for hunters. From the coast in the south where red deer migrate down in mild winters, to the barren heath areas in Setesdal where wild reindeer have roamed for thousands of years. The county has Norway's densest red deer population after Vestland, and there are good opportunities for red deer hunting in the coastal forests between Kristiansand and Mandal.

Setesdal Vesthei is one of the last wild reindeer areas in Europe, and hunting here is regulated through the wild reindeer board. The terrain is demanding. You need to be in good shape and able to handle weather and wind. But the reward is great for those who put in the effort.

For small game hunters, the heath areas offer reasonable ptarmigan terrain, although populations vary. Black grouse can be found scattered in the coniferous forests in the central parts of the county. Along the coast there is goose hunting in autumn, and roe deer hunting inland provides steady yields.

Terrain and nature

Agder stretches from the archipelago in the south to the heath areas in the north. The coastal forests are dominated by oak and pine, while the inland offers vast expanses of heather and bogs. Setesdal Vesthei is one of Norway's most important wild reindeer areas. The heaths in the north are open and easy to survey, while the valleys have dense mixed forest.
