Hunting in Innlandet

Innlandet is Norway's big game county. More moose are harvested here than anywhere else in the country, and Østerdalen alone accounts for a large share of the national harvest. The forests are enormous. You can walk for days without hitting a road. That provides a hunting experience that is hard to match elsewhere.

For those who want to hunt wild reindeer, Innlandet has some of the most accessible mountain areas. Rondane and Snøhetta (Dovrefjell) are popular, and there are both private and state commons terrain to apply for.

Small game hunting in Innlandet is underrated. Forest grouse hunting in Hedmark — capercaillie and black grouse over pointing dogs — is a tradition that is alive and well. Ptarmigan hunting in the mountains varies with population cycles, but good years offer fine hunting in easy-to-walk terrain. Hare hunting with trailing hounds also has strong traditions here.

Terrain and nature

Innlandet is by far Norway's largest hunting county, with everything from lowland forests in Hedmark to mountain areas in Jotunheimen. Østerdalen and Gudbrandsdalen are classic moose terrain with large continuous forest areas. The mountain areas Rondane, Dovrefjell, and Jotunheimen are home to wild reindeer herds. Meadow forests and cultural landscapes provide good conditions for roe deer.
