Boat hunting

Sea bird hunting and other hunting from boats along the coast and on lakes.
Hunting from a boat is an important form of hunting along the Norwegian coast, particularly for sea birds and eider ducks. The boat provides access to islands, skerries, and sea areas that are inaccessible from land.
Eider duck hunting from a boat typically involves motoring slowly along islets and skerries where eider ducks gather. When the birds flush, they are shot in flight with a shotgun. It requires good boat handling and quick shooting technique.
Duck hunting from a boat on lakes and rivers is a calmer affair. You paddle or row quietly along the reeds and shoot birds that flush. Best at dusk when the ducks are active.
Seal hunting from a boat is permitted in parts of the Norwegian coast. The hunt is conducted from an anchored or drifting boat, and requires rifle shots at close range. Seals are protected in large parts of Norway, and quota hunting is strictly regulated.
Safety in a boat is absolutely essential. Never stand upright and shoot from a small boat. Wear a life jacket. The weapon must be secured during transport. Only shoot when the boat is stable.
Motor-driven hunting (driving birds with a boat motor) is prohibited. The engine must be turned off before shooting.
