Hunting in Troms og Finnmark

Troms og Finnmark is ptarmigan country. Finnmarksvidda has Europe's largest continuous ptarmigan terrain, and in good years you can walk all day and see birds consistently. It is hunting in its simplest form: you, the dog, and the plateau. No cell coverage, no people, just nature.

Moose hunting in Troms and inner Finnmark has grown in scope. The forests in Troms have a moderate moose population, and hunting often takes place in birch forests and along rivers.

But it is ptarmigan hunting that draws people northward. Finnmarkseiendommen (FeFo) manages enormous hunting areas that are accessible to all Norwegian hunters for an affordable permit. That makes this one of the most accessible hunting experiences in the country, even though the logistics of getting here can be challenging.

Terrain and nature

Norway's largest and northernmost county. Finnmarksvidda is Europe's largest wilderness, endless plateaus with dwarf birch, bogs, and lakes. Troms has more mountains and fjords, with steep alpine formations. The coast has midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter. The tree line is low, and the forest boundary can be at 300–400 meters above sea level.
