Hunting in Nordland

Nordland offers some of the country's most spectacular hunting experiences. Ptarmigan hunting in Lofoten with mountains plunging straight into the sea, moose hunting in the great forests of Helgeland, or small game hunting across the plateau in Saltdal. The nature here is raw and untouched in a way you rarely find farther south.

Helgeland is the most productive area for big game. The moose population is healthy, and there are scattered red deer populations in the southern parts. Roe deer have gradually expanded their range northward in recent decades.

Ptarmigan hunting is perhaps what Nordland is best known for among hunters. The mountain areas of inner Salangen, Fauske, and Sørfold traditionally have good populations. But numbers fluctuate, and it pays to follow the survey results from local hunting and fishing associations before planning your trip.

Terrain and nature

Nordland stretches from Helgeland in the south to Lofoten in the north. The county has varied terrain: from the flat bogs of Helgeland to the sharp peaks of Lofoten. Saltfjellet forms a natural boundary between south and north. The tree line is lower than farther south, and birch forest dominates in the mountains.
